Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, May 30 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \n“I have learned that to be with those I like is enough.” \n– Walt Whitman \n“The Age of the BarMoth Has Ended!” is a personal shrine to the popular Five Points establishment\, 1892 East Restaurant & Tavern\, which closed its doors in May of 2025\, after over fifteen years of indulging the appetites of its many patrons and matrons. Its bar was a wonderful place to have a casual conversation with strangers or to develop lifelong friendships\, all while quaffing local brews or sipping magical elixirs concocted by their many talented mixologists. \nA centerpiece of this installation is the collection of “bar napkin art” loaned by Ben (Going)\, who\, for several years\, was the loquacious Wednesday night bartender. \nThese paper napkins were stained almost exclusively from high gravity\, dark beers (such as Unobtainium\, a bourbon barrel-aged Old Ale\, locally brewed by Straight To Ale) or stouts\, then were subsequently embellished with ink pen\, creating surreal imagery. \nOther objects d’art of this installation are made from former 1892 East advertising signage. Some of these were designed by another bartender\, Allen (Meeks)\, whose resounding laughter was often heard during his tenure there. \nThis installation is dedicated to the many waiters and waitresses\, chefs and kitchen staff\, and hosts and hostesses who knew the BarMoth by name; and especially to the bartenders (and *mixologists!) and closers who most inspired the artist with their openness and fast friendships (and\, of course\, marvelous *concoctions!): Allen\, Anna\, Ben\, *Christina\, **Chuck\, Dylan\, Jordan\, Juna\, *Kimbo\, *Mary\, *Mike\, Miriam\, and *Timothy. \nThe BarMoth’s C8H11NO2 (3\,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine) receptors are forever grateful! \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJoey Norwood is an Alabama native whose art tends to focus on installations featuring abstract concepts. He has exhibited in Lowe Mill since its conversion into an artist’s haven over twenty years ago. The current installation is the fourth in a biennial winter/spring series\, which includes “Ha-i-ku-ba-ti-o-n (in the yurt)” (2024)\, “Hyperfactual” (2022)\, and “Hind-Sight is Twenty-Twenty” (2020)\, but harkens back to another from nearly thirteen years ago: “Quinceañera” – a celebration of fifteen years of marriage to his extraordinary and lovely wife\, Beth. The exhibition positions each work as a visual afterword—an ending that is not dramatic\, but subdued\, and reflective. Through engaging composition\, color palette\, and atmospheric techniques\, Timothy invites viewers to encounter places and objects that persist beyond their usefulness\, existing only as remnants of memory. \nBy focusing on forgotten landscapes and still life\, Epilogue addresses broader themes of loss and quiet endurance. I love learning the history of my subject and gain the appreciation that helps me create meaningful art. From the earliest cave paintings to contemporary cultural icons\, animals have served as mirrors for human emotion\, survival\, and belief. They appear in our myths and spiritual practices as protectors\, messengers\, and teachers\, and in our daily lives as beloved companions—bridging the sacred and the familiar. \nRooted in anthropology and symbolism\, this body of work examines how humans have continually turned to animals to express identity and belonging. Animals become vessels for storytelling and meaning\, carrying cultural memory across generations. Whether represented as mythological beings\, totems\, or domestic presences\, they reflect humanity’s need to understand itself through the natural world and to find connection beyond the human realm. \nAbout the artist: \nBorn and raised in Huntsville\, Alabama\, Cindy’s artistic odyssey began to take shape while she pursued her studies in art at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Simultaneously\, she delved into the demanding world of graphic design\, embracing the challenges of a full-time job while nurturing her creative spirit through personal artistic exploration outside the realms of work and academia.\n\nIn a pivotal twist\, Cindy’s path led her to the majestic landscapes of Boulder\, Colorado\, where she embarked on a journey into the realms of archaeology and anthropology. Over the course of a decade\, she immersed herself in the rich cultural tapestry of the region\, earning a degree from the University of Colorado. This chapter in her life not only enriched her understanding of history but also profoundly influenced her artistic expression.\n\nIn 2007\, a new adventure awaited Cindy as she accepted the role of Program Manager for the Graphic Contract at NASA Headquarters in Washington\, D.C. Here\, Cindy’s artistry continued to evolve amid the intersection of technology\, science\, and creative expression\, further enriching her unique perspective.\n\nHowever\, the call of her roots eventually drew her back to Huntsville in 2015. It was here that she fulfilled a long-held dream\, establishing her own art studio within the Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment complex. Guided by my love for Jesus\, I created this work with the intent to reflect biblical compassion and empathy and to invite others into the same freedom and healing He has given me-with the hope it does the same for viewers. These pieces are inspired by songs that marked specific seasons of my life\, functioning as anchors for memory\, grief\, and endurance. I used various iconography\, texture\, and movement of color to create tangible expressions of both deep lament over the past and gritty faith moving toward sanctification. Mixed media allows for accumulation\, interruption\, and revision\, which mirrors the emotional landscape of the work. Each piece is also a reflection of my own journey-honest\, sometimes messy\, but always rooted in redemption from the Lord. My hope is that as you experience this space\, you feel seen\, known\, and encouraged-no matter what you have walked through. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nMaddie Wideman is a faith-based mixed media artist based in Atlanta\, GA. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Samford University\, where she discovered her love for mixed media and watercolor and developed a personal style that reflects both whimsy and depth.  \nShe has won multiple juried art shows\, has shown in local galleries\, and has participated in exhibitions in both Georgia and Alabama. She has taught watercolor through Samford’s Academy of the Arts and Peachtree Art Center in Georgia and now creates watercolor guest portraits for wedding events. For me\, painting is not just creation; it’s communication. Art allows me to express feelings that are too heavy or complicated to put into words\, transforming sorrow into something visual\, tangible\, and healing.  \nThe majority of my work consists of surrealist self-portraits that embody emotional states rather than likeness. Each piece represents a chapter of my healing journey — navigating loss\, divorce\, and rebirth. After the sudden loss of my father\, I turned to painting as a way to process the overwhelming grief that followed. In Organs\, a nude female figure removes her lungs\, tongue\, and brain — symbols of suffocation\, silence\, and overthinking — yet keeps her heart intact\, a quiet act of resilience and hope. Wrapped in a vine of white flowers\, she slowly unravels herself from the binds that once held her.  \nIn Wallflower\, another self-portrait\, I explore the feeling of invisibility and the process of re-emergence. They become stories of our life experiences\, memories of past travels\,  and they document loved ones we once knew.  \nLeigh Ann is wanting viewers to reflect on how we often use photographs to build  memories and stories to share with others. It is through photo collage\, traditional matte  and frame and her classic approach to photography with vintage film cameras that she  wants others to feel they have stepped into another era of photography.  \nHer use of black and white film helps to create a nostalgic and reminiscent approach of  today’s modern world we live in. The images are a continuation of what was and what is and how our memory connects the past to the present. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLeigh Ann Edmonds is a documentary photographer from Birmingham\, Alabama. Her work  predominantly explores the land\, culture and people of the American South and is often  described as timeless\, gritty and soulful. Leigh Ann is the 2025 recipient for the Gay Burke Memorial Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. She studied under the late Gay Burke at UA and obtained a BA in  Studio Art from the University of Alabama in 2004 with a concentration in photography.  \nLeigh Ann believes that her work is a journal of her life\, the people she meets and the  places she explores and hopes to document in a way that helps to commemorate and  preserve the era in which she lives. For me\, painting is not just creation; it’s communication. Art allows me to express feelings that are too heavy or complicated to put into words\, transforming sorrow into something visual\, tangible\, and healing.  \nThe majority of my work consists of surrealist self-portraits that embody emotional states rather than likeness. Each piece represents a chapter of my healing journey — navigating loss\, divorce\, and rebirth. After the sudden loss of my father\, I turned to painting as a way to process the overwhelming grief that followed. Years of experimenting with old magazines\, found ephemera\, and personal mark-making led him to discover that the simple act of cutting\, tearing\, and reassembling was a form of personal alchemy. Each piece is born from a spontaneous gesture rather than a preconceived concept. \nHis work is rooted in catharsis through process. He enjoys taking bits and pieces of contrasting shapes\, textures\, and colors to create a wholly new identity. The studio becomes a zone of release\, where time collapses and decisions are made in the moment. His compositions emerge organically as he follows intuition—no underlying narrative guides the hand. The resulting collages are traces of an emotional state\, snapshots of creative necessity rather than coded symbols demanding interpretation. \nOften asked if his works contain hidden metaphors\, John insists that the art rarely carries a deeper meaning beyond the joy and urgency of creation. By stripping away intentional symbolism\, John invites viewers to experience the pure dynamism of collage\, allowing them to create their own interpretations. He views his work as an unfiltered act of creation\, a ritual of renewal. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJohn Simmons was born and raised in Jacksonville\, AL\, and graduated from Jax State University with a BFA in Graphic Design. He received 2 silver Addy’s and 1 Gold Addy for work created as an undergraduate. His call to create is centered around sharing his true thoughts and feelings while striving to understand and relate to others. \nHe has a keen sense of design and its relation to form and function. His mixed media approach focuses on juxtaposition and attention to detail. His body of work displays a true purgative release of thoughtful energy that is both powerful and refined. Working to invite divergent perspectives\, his work bears witness to a melting pot of ideas and the various ways we perceive those ideas. Yet\, still\, I feel as if I am opening my heart  and allowing everyone to view my soul.  \nThe Art is Me. I took a DNA test and discovered my ancestry is African\, Native American\,  French\, Welsh\, German\, and Swiss. This revelation made me compassionate for the  traumatic journey that begets my diverse and complex heritage.  \nI illustrate raw emotions conveyed through body language. Emotions are universal. They  transcend cultural boundaries and connect us all. As an artist\, I aspire to motivate others  to embrace their unique heritage while fostering a connection to humanity through our  shared emotional experiences.  \nArt is like looking into a mirror. So\, though I paint through the gaze of a black woman  – when my art resonates with your soul\, the art becomes a reflection of you. And  because of the emotional connection\, you can look at my art and honestly say\, The Art is Me! \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLaShonda Scott Robinson is a self-taught watercolor artist who calls Tuscaloosa\, AL  home.  \nLaShonda captures deep\, often unspoken emotions through body language. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the Exhibit: \nFor over a decade\, Monica Yother has painted dance figures that focus on movement\, emotion\, strength\, and grace- capturing the dance itself rather than the dancer. In this new body of work\, however\, she shifts her gaze beyond the performance to the performer. On stage\, the dancer often becomes nearly transparent-what we witness on stage is the story and the character brought to life through choreography and costume\, rather than the individual behind it. Yother is intrigued by the concept of “the transparent dancer\,” aiming to reveal a glimpse of the person beneath the performance. \nRather than present the dancers on a stage with wooden floor and fabric curtains\, she chose to suggest the world that the dancer’s character might inhabit. Instead of a heavy curtain that hides the scene from the audience\, we see semi-transparent fabric that flows behind and in some cases in front of the figure\, to suggest the transparency of the dancer. \nIt is the intention of this selection of works to look at ballet through a different lens\, and observe dancers caught between movement\, between notes. \n  \nAbout the Artist: \nMonica Yother is primarily an oil painter\, focusing on dance figures\, though she does enjoy painting animals and birds. Since 2008 she has been the resident artist for Huntsville Ballet\, creating art work for the organization that has become the brand. She is currently working on an MFA with a concentration in painting and drawing. In 2020\, after stepping away from Chef life\, Robby began transitioning his creative energy into a different kind of art. Pieces in this show came from group efforts. Promoting mutual aide fundraisers. Using words mixed with visual images to spread awareness for social injustices. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nSome years back I shipped a show of my assemblage makings over to Dublin\, Ireland to appear in this high dollar art gallery on the grounds of Trinity College. \nOn the customs form the powers that be asked for a detailed breakdown of what I was shipping\, so I just wrote ‘garbage’. \nSee\, when I was a kid I got yelled at a lot for digging through other people’s garbage piles. Some said it was unsanitary\, others undignified. I didn’t much care what they thought\, as certain items in said garbage piles spoke to me\, asking to be liberated from their ignominious fate. \nOf course\, they got a pejorative term for people who dig in garbage piles\, dragging home mountains of worthless\, discarded objects-they call those folks ‘hoarders’. There’s popular intervention shows on TV that follow the sad lifestyles of such individuals. I watched a few episodes and winced from time to time. \nDespite certain superficial similarities\, I surmised that I’m definitely not a hoarder. Why? Because it’s not hoarding if you put what you find to use-which I do. Approaching it that way\, you’re not some sick-o digging in filthy garbage piles\, you’re just a low income artist out there collecting free art supplies.  \nAnd after three or four decades of gathering up quite the mountain of such free art supplies\, I find myself in possession of a truly magnificent stash of unwanted American esoterica. And from time to time when I do dare venture into certain wildly overcrowded rooms here in this old farm house where I live\, said items of esoterica\, they start calling out\, like sirens luring me nearer the rocks of creativity.   \nNext thing I know I got a bottle of wood glue in one hand and a C-clamp in the other. Paint brushes are brandished willy-nilly as visual connections are hastily forged. It’s a form of low brow magic.   \nI never set out with any vision or plan-I’m not the slightest bit conceptually minded. There is no deep message intended by this work\, with the exception of the notion that given the right circumstances\, anything\, living or not\, can be redeemed. \nSo far as I can tell\, I was put here on this earth to manifest those circumstances.  And so I do. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nThere’s no conventional marketplace category that even remotely describes what I do\, unless consummate outsider could be considered a commercial genre.  \nFor the last thirty years I’ve split my time and creative vision between working as a musician (eight studio albums\, five side projects)\, a visual artist (exhibitions both nationally and internationally) and a writer (2 books\, 1 Pushcart Prize for short fiction). \nAt the unlikely age of thirty eight I was “discovered”\, then championed by David Byrne\, of Talking Heads fame. Prior to that I worked in obscurity\, so it was a big paradigm shift. \nSongs of mine have been featured in film and TV\, including prime slots in the Breaking Bad franchise. This collection reflects on my time as a foreign painter immersed in the rich\, layered world of Istanbul: a place where ancient empires meet modern rhythms\, and where every street corner holds a burst of color\, scent\, or sound. \nThrough vibrant palettes\, textured surfaces\, and dynamic forms\, these works capture the chaos and cohesion of a city alive with history and daily ritual. From the deep reds of street-side spices to the pastel shimmer of tile mosaics\, from the tangled geometry of architecture to the soft intimacy of sharing tea\, each piece is a translation of sensory experience into visual language. \nThe paintings shift between representation and abstraction\, reflecting how I navigated this unfamiliar city—sometimes clearly\, sometimes intuitively. Wandering through Istanbul felt like moving through a living mosaic\, a patchwork of empires and cultures\, where cats nap beside centuries-old ruins and the scent of baklava drifts past contemporary storefronts. \nAt the heart of it all: tea. A moment of stillness and warmth amid the movement. This show is a meditation on discovery\, observation\, and the beauty of getting lost. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLiz Onken is an abstract expressionist painter based in Huntsville\, Alabama. She earned her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from Auburn University and continued her studies in Rome\, where she deepened her understanding of art history and traditional techniques. \nNamed Emerging Artist of the Year in 2018 by World Art Collector magazine\, Liz is known for her bold abstract paintings\, as well as her mixed media and textile-based works. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nInspired by the sun shining through rainbow window film\, the idea for “Everyday Rainbows” began when I captured pictures of sun painted rainbows across my bathroom sink vanity and evolved into an exploration of color.  \nWhile studying for my art degree\, I discovered my love of color went deeper than the clothes I wore or how I decorated. I began utilizing color to tell a story\, emphasize a design\, or create an emotion. Combining those colors with simple shapes allowed me to think minimally while making a big impact. As I was naturally drawn to bright\, neon\, and iridescent colors\, it steadily became a focus in my art to incorporate eye catching color. \nEvery piece of art you see here is created from just 3 colors: pink\, yellow\, and blue. By limiting myself\, I explored\, experimented\, and showed the versatility of color. It is satisfying to see the way combinations\, layers\, and techniques\, can elicit vastly different reactions. I tried new\, experimental styles of creation with media outside my norm to further explore the opportunities these 3 colors could provide. \nAs you peruse the gallery\, you will see the breadth of opportunity within these 3 colors. Though each start from the same place\, the results can be vastly different.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nKristin is a Creative Marketing Manager\, Graphic Designer\, and Printmaker. She has a B.A. in History from the University of Louisville and a B.A. in Studio Art/Graphic Design from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a Graphic Designer and Marketer\, she gets to create corporate design including brand development\, campaigns\, documents\, software design\, and more. In her personal art\, she focuses on illustration and branding. As a Printmaker\, she primarily works in linoleum\, woodblock\, and screen printing. Their paintings\, photographs\, book arts and writing are expressions of the inspiration by Alabama’s wildest places that have deeply influenced their work and their lives. The aim of this exhibit and its associated workshops\, Forest Bathing walks\, and Wilderness hikes is to bring awareness of the importance of the treasure of Wilderness for all living things\, and to advance Wild Alabama’s mission to inspire people to enjoy\, value and protect the wild places of Alabama.  \n2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act that gave us all three federal Wilderness areas in Alabama. This exhibition is a body of work reflecting on the presence and importance of the physicality held in objects.These altered and re-contextualized forms represent the dense honesty three dimensions can have\, while simultaneously being multifaceted conceptually. Conditions for Progress is an inside look into how as an artist\, I know to process and reimagine life beyond the language I speak and represent it in sculpture. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nMy name is Nate Husser from Madison\, Alabama. I am a 2025 Graduate from the University of North Alabama where I majored in Sculpture. I have been practicing and creating in different mediums of art from photography\, filmmaking\, to collage the last 10 years of my life. Sculpture has taken over as my main form of creative expression and fascination. With my sculpture I am able to create\, replicate\, and alter different forms to change or elevate their meaning. This being said\, I consider myself a conceptual artist.
