SUMMARY:Liz Onken - Tea in Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Liz Onken which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nTea in Istanbul is a visual diary—an abstracted love letter to a city that overwhelmed my senses and opened my eyes. This collection reflects on my time as a foreign painter immersed in the rich\, layered world of Istanbul: a place where ancient empires meet modern rhythms\, and where every street corner holds a burst of color\, scent\, or sound. \nThrough vibrant palettes\, textured surfaces\, and dynamic forms\, these works capture the chaos and cohesion of a city alive with history and daily ritual. From the deep reds of street-side spices to the pastel shimmer of tile mosaics\, from the tangled geometry of architecture to the soft intimacy of sharing tea\, each piece is a translation of sensory experience into visual language. \nThe paintings shift between representation and abstraction\, reflecting how I navigated this unfamiliar city—sometimes clearly\, sometimes intuitively. Wandering through Istanbul felt like moving through a living mosaic\, a patchwork of empires and cultures\, where cats nap beside centuries-old ruins and the scent of baklava drifts past contemporary storefronts. \nAt the heart of it all: tea. A moment of stillness and warmth amid the movement. This show is a meditation on discovery\, observation\, and the beauty of getting lost. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLiz Onken is an abstract expressionist painter based in Huntsville\, Alabama. She earned her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from Auburn University and continued her studies in Rome\, where she deepened her understanding of art history and traditional techniques. \nNamed Emerging Artist of the Year in 2018 by World Art Collector magazine\, Liz is known for her bold abstract paintings\, as well as her mixed media and textile-based works. Her art has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and abroad. \nAfter years of working and studying in other cities\, Liz is excited to return to her hometown\, where she continues to create and exhibit work inspired by both her Southern roots and international experiences. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kristin Hudson - Everyday Rainbows
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kristin Hudson which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nInspired by the sun shining through rainbow window film\, the idea for “Everyday Rainbows” began when I captured pictures of sun painted rainbows across my bathroom sink vanity and evolved into an exploration of color.  \nWhile studying for my art degree\, I discovered my love of color went deeper than the clothes I wore or how I decorated. I began utilizing color to tell a story\, emphasize a design\, or create an emotion. Combining those colors with simple shapes allowed me to think minimally while making a big impact. As I was naturally drawn to bright\, neon\, and iridescent colors\, it steadily became a focus in my art to incorporate eye catching color. \nEvery piece of art you see here is created from just 3 colors: pink\, yellow\, and blue. By limiting myself\, I explored\, experimented\, and showed the versatility of color. It is satisfying to see the way combinations\, layers\, and techniques\, can elicit vastly different reactions. I tried new\, experimental styles of creation with media outside my norm to further explore the opportunities these 3 colors could provide. \nAs you peruse the gallery\, you will see the breadth of opportunity within these 3 colors. Though each start from the same place\, the results can be vastly different.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nKristin is a Creative Marketing Manager\, Graphic Designer\, and Printmaker. She has a B.A. in History from the University of Louisville and a B.A. in Studio Art/Graphic Design from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a Graphic Designer and Marketer\, she gets to create corporate design including brand development\, campaigns\, documents\, software design\, and more. In her personal art\, she focuses on illustration and branding. As a Printmaker\, she primarily works in linoleum\, woodblock\, and screen printing. Kristin has studio 2054 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment where she is lucky enough to be able to work remotely\, create during off hours\, experiment with all kinds of different art styles/mediums\, and enjoy a community of artists full of encouragement and motivation. \n  \n@kdesignartstudio \nwww.kdesignartstudio.com  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wild Alabama - Conservation through Art: 50 Years of Wilderness in Alabama
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Wild Alabama which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nEach artist in this exhibit has a personal and profound relationship with the federal Wilderness areas in Alabama. Their paintings\, photographs\, book arts and writing are expressions of the inspiration by Alabama’s wildest places that have deeply influenced their work and their lives. The aim of this exhibit and its associated workshops\, Forest Bathing walks\, and Wilderness hikes is to bring awareness of the importance of the treasure of Wilderness for all living things\, and to advance Wild Alabama’s mission to inspire people to enjoy\, value and protect the wild places of Alabama.  \n2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act that gave us all three federal Wilderness areas in Alabama. This exhibit is a celebration of the persistent efforts of Alabamians who fought for the Act\, and the wisdom of a Congress that gave it overwhelming bipartisan support. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nathan Husser - Conditions for Progress
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Nathan Husser which will be on view in the First Floor West Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nConditions for Progress is a multimedia solo exhibition containing sculptures made from plaster\, glass\, cheesecloth\, wood and more. This exhibition is a body of work reflecting on the presence and importance of the physicality held in objects. These altered and re-contextualized forms represent the dense honesty three dimensions can have\, while simultaneously being multifaceted conceptually. Conditions for Progress is an inside look into how as an artist\, I know to process and reimagine life beyond the language I speak and represent it in sculpture. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nMy name is Nate Husser from Madison\, Alabama. I am a 2025 Graduate from the University of North Alabama where I majored in Sculpture. I have been practicing and creating in different mediums of art from photography\, filmmaking\, to collage the last 10 years of my life. Sculpture has taken over as my main form of creative expression and fascination. With my sculpture I am able to create\, replicate\, and alter different forms to change or elevate their meaning. This being said\, I consider myself a conceptual artist. I am always questioning and trying to derive new meaning from my surroundings.  \n

SUMMARY:Kathryn Williamson - Climate Women
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kathryn Williamson which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nI believe that healing the climate is connected with healing ourselves\, which includes listening to those small seeds of yearning we have\, to share ourselves and live out loud from our passions. I always loved astrophysics and art\, and the climate crisis asks me to bring both the scientific and artistic parts of myself forward to be more whole. I’ve spent much of the last decade as an academic\, an astronomy educator\, hardly painting at all. This “Climate Women” series is a gift to myself. It has accompanied a larger shift in my life of transitioning from academia to independent consulting\, from frantic rushing to being more intentional with my time\, and from following rigid perceptions of what a “professional” does to listening more to the messy\, creative parts of myself. Painting these women while listening to recordings of them speaking on stage or in interviews has become a meditation practice for me to listen\, learn\, create\, and connect. \nI originally started this series by painting authors from the book All We Can Save\, but since the book has about fifty authors\, I started to bounce around. In no particular order\, I just followed my whims for topics that caught my eye. I expanded to women I know personally and/or learned about through other efforts. I have many more portraits I’d like to paint\, and I made more paintings for this series than I’m sharing in public. This is for a few important reasons. The first has to do with consent. A big part of this effort is the practice of respect and reciprocity. I vowed from the beginning that I would only display the paintings if I received explicit permission. There are a handful of women I painted who I was not able to reach\, and it was not for lack of trying! For example\, I can see that a few of the women are extremely busy taking brave actions\, and after brief attempts to contact them\, I thought it might be best to just let them be so they can focus. Others seem to have totally disappeared from contact. It gives me a sinking feeling. I wonder\, why? Did their activism bring them into harm’s way? Are they okay? There is only one painting where I got an explicit “not at this time” response. There is also one painting that is just bad; I’m too embarrassed to share it with anyone. It was one of the first ones I started\, and I could feel myself rushing\, trying to “accomplish” the big task ahead. I keep it as a reminder to take my time and prioritize investing in process and quality. Then there are the paintings where I did invest careful attention to detail\, and I’m very proud of the resulting quality\, and I still couldn’t reach the woman depicted\, so I sit with that feeling of not getting what I thought I wanted\, without getting that external validation. And that\, too\, is a learning practice for me. \nThis collection is not at all representative of the many women who show up to help make a better world. In general\, compared to men\, women are more likely to recognize climate change as a serious problem\, more concerned global climate change will harm them personally\, and believe that people will have to make major lifestyle changes to reduce the effects of global climate change (Pew Research Global Attitudes Survey 2015). While women suffer disproportionately from resource scarcity and natural disasters resulting from climate change\, women also hold significant community and ecological knowledge\, can mobilize households\, and can safeguard health measures such as sanitation and forest regeneration. This is why gender equity is listed as one of the key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \nWhether you are inspired by the women featured in this collection\, other women helping their communities\, and/or all the awesome non-women activists out there helping to envision and generate a healthy\, equitable\, and sustainable future\, I hope you find your unique role in the climate movement. We need everyone. We need you! \nOriginal paintings are not for sale. See ursagaia.com if you would like to purchase a 18×24-inch mosaic poster print of the collection. Proceeds will be donated to the All We Can Save Project. \n

SUMMARY:THE LOST WEEKEND: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF MAY PANG
DESCRIPTION:MAY PANG\, JOHN LENNON’S COMPANION & LOVER DURING HIS “LOST WEEKEND” ERA TO SHOWCASE HER CANDID PHOTOS OF LENNON AT A SPECIAL THREE-DAY FREE EXHIBITION AT LOWE MILL ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT IN HUNTSVILLE\, AL\, THURSDAY\, MAY 29 – SATURDAY\, MAY 31\, 2025 \nEXHIBITION ENTITLED “THE LOST WEEKEND: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF MAY PANG” COINCIDES WITH THE DIGITAL RELEASE OF THE FEATURE FILM DOCUMENTARY ON LENNON AND PANG “THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY” \nMAY PANG TO APPEAR AT SHOW TO MEET AND GREET CUSTOMERS \nFew people knew John Lennon as intimately as May Pang.  Pang was Lennon’s lover during the infamous “Lost Weekend” which lasted 18 months during late 1973 through 1975.  During this highly creative time for Lennon\, Pang took candid photos of Lennon in a comfortable\, relaxed environment.  A collection of these private photographs will be on display and available for purchase at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment\, 2211 Seminole Drive SW\, Huntsville\, AL.\, on Thursday\, May 29 through Saturday\, May 31.  Admission to the exhibit is free to the public. All works are available to purchase – See John Lennon as May saw him! \nMay Pang will be in attendance at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment all weekend\, meeting customers and telling stories behind these amazing limited-edition photographs for sale of John Lennon. \nDuring the Lost Weekend\, with May’s help\, Lennon had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles-with the albums “Mind Games”\, “Walls and Bridges”\, which included his only #1 Hit Single “Whatever Gets You Through the Night”\, “Rock and Roll” and collaboration with Rock legends Elton John\, David Bowie\, Harry Nilsson\, Mick Jagger\, and Ringo among others. Also\, on that album Pang can be heard on the song “#9 Dream” where she whispers John’s name in the song.  Another song on the album “Surprise\, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)” was written about Pang. \nPang also encouraged Lennon to reconnect with his family and his friends\, which ultimately led to a reunion with Paul McCartney and a memorable jam session between the two Beatles.  Pang also arranged for Julian Lennon to visit his father for the first time in almost three years.  One of Pang’s photographs of Julian Lennon graces the cover of Julian’s latest album entitled “Jude.” \nLennon also went into the studio with friend Harry Nilsson during this time and produced his album “Pussy Cats.”  It was during this time that Pang rented a house in Santa Monica and moved in with Lennon and fellow partiers Ringo Starr\, Keith Moon (The Who) and Harry Nilsson.  Several photos from this time also appear in the exhibition.  Other highlights of the exhibition include the only photograph that exists of John Lennon signing the contract to dissolve the Beatles as well as one of the last known photographs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney together from March 29\, 1974 (51 years ago this weekend)!  Both photographs have never been available to the public until now. \nPang has also published three books on her times with Lennon including Loving John\, John Lennon – The Lost Weekend and Instamatic Karma featuring photos from her private archives. \n“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” coincides with the digital release of the feature film documentary “The Lost Weekend : A Love Story\,” produced by Briarcliff Entertainment. Watch the film’s trailer here: https://www.MayPangPhotography.com/lost-weekend-documentary/      (Available on Amazon Prime\, AppleTV\, YouTube. Xfinity\, Verizon and Vudu). \n“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” exhibition will provide fans a rare opportunity to see John Lennon in a new light\, through the lens of someone who knew him intimately during one of the most creative periods of his life.  Pang’s photos will be on display and available to purchase for three days only.  Check out the show and meet May Pang at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment\, 2211 Seminole Drive SW\, Huntsville\, AL\, Thursday\, May 29 through Saturday\, May 31\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis - Landscapes in Paint and Metal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \n  \nThe collaborative exhibit of new work by sculptor Steve Davis and painter Lorrie Lane is all about the southern landscape\, a place filled with trees\, rivers\, lakes\, and humid skies. Davis’s tree and leaf forms seem to move and twist organically\, reflecting the abundant natural growth present in Alabama. Lane’s focus on tree-lined water edges is more about the memory of a moment by the river than a specific place. Informed by the Transcendentalists\, filtered through a contemporary art point of view\, their shared vision creates a contemplative space for appreciating the natural world. \n  \nAbout the artists: \nLorrie Lane is an oil painter living in Tuscaloosa\, AL. SUMMARY:Garland Farwell - Stars Fell
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Garland Farwell which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nStars Fell is part of an ongoing examination of folk art and quilting as visual  narratives. Crafted from salvaged wood and tin\, the works play a role in the  preservation of memory and the acknowledgement of human experiences through  generations. It is an intersection of aesthetics and function.  \nStars Fell references ‘Stars Fell on Alabama’\, a 1934 novel by Carl Carmer about his  experiences living in Alabama as a young transplant from New York. Writing about  the people\, places\, and events he witnessed\, Carmer illuminated the ordinary and  extraordinary of Alabama. Its myths and legends alongside its everyday life. Similarly\, the Stars Fell exhibit pays homage to Alabama in that the raw material of  the work was found here only. Each board and slat bears witness and tells many  stories. It is my hope that the work reflects back the experiences of multitudes.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAfter many years working as a theater and puppetry artist in New York City I  journeyed to the Alabama Black Belt to explore Folk Art\, Rural Art\, and Outsider Art.  In this journey I’ve found great inspiration and discovered new creative paths. An  intended two-month stay in rural Alabama has morphed into more than 16 years.  My art practice has transformed to reflect this new environment. By adapting the  practical and humble approach to life and creativity of the people of the rural south\,  my process has become more streamlined and the work\, while encountering its  share of challenges\, flows more effortlessly.  \nWhile art and design traditions such as quilting and hex sign painting are major  influences on my work\, the primary materials of my practice are reclaimed wood\,  rusted metals\, and old house paint.   \nI prioritize natural processes of deterioration and decay\, often weaving in fragments  of the scorched and burned. In this regard\, my function is artist as well as principal  organizer. Climate\, the environment and time are my collaborators\, determining  textures\, tones\, and depth of colors.   \nWebsite \nInstagram \n  \n
